Assassination Rules
Assassination is one of the most narratively dramatic tools available in Landfall SMP. It allows characters to enact revenge, eliminate rivals, or shift the balance of power—but it also risks disrupting a player’s experience. These rules are designed to make assassination fair, cinematic, and collaborative.
This system is primarily intended for situations where a player wishes to assassinate another character who does not consent to a character death. If the target consents, players are free to resolve the scene however they like.
General Principles
- Assassination is allowed, but must follow narrative and mechanical fairness.
- Death consequences should be worked out collaboratively between the involved players.
- If players cannot agree on the outcome and a canon death is required narratively, a moderation ticket should be opened. Staff will help mediate based on fairness, buildup, and story impact.
Requirements for a Valid Assassination
To ensure the act is justified and fair:
- Narrative Justification
- The would-be assassin must have an in-character reason: betrayal, political rivalry, vengeance, etc.
- This can be subtle or secretive but must exist and be discoverable.
- In-Character Execution
- The assassination must happen through gameplay, not through Discord posts alone.
- Ambushes, infiltration, poison, traps, or direct attacks are all valid—if narratively earned.
- Limited Impact & Escape Options
- The attempt should give the target a chance to escape or fight back, unless the situation is extremely well-planned (e.g., a long con).
- It may not be repeated against the same target for at least 14 real-life days unless escalation continues.
Aftermath & Consequences
If the assassination succeeds, the victim may choose:
- Canon Death – Their character dies permanently and is removed from play.
- Survival or Disfigurement – The character survives, possibly wounded, disgraced, or altered.
- Political Fallout – They are forced to resign, flee, or cede power without dying.
These choices should be discussed OOC in good faith. Assassination should feel like a climax—not a cheap way to win.
Abuse Protections
- No metagaming: You may not act on knowledge gained OOC (e.g., spying on Discord).
- No spawn camping or repeat killing: Assassinations should be surgical, not messy.
- No proxy loopholes: Hiring an assassin does not excuse your group from following these rules.
If an assassination is performed without proper buildup or is purely disruptive, it may be voided or rolled back.
Conflict Resolution
If the target of an assassination refuses to allow any narrative consequence, and the assassin believes the outcome is essential to the plot, a moderation ticket should be opened. Staff will:
- Review the buildup and justification.
- Talk to both parties.
- Help reach a fair compromise that keeps the canon fair.
Assassination is about tension, not control. The best scenes are the ones that surprise everyone—even the killer.
